Wildfires - A Growing Natural Hazard.

Wildfire/forest fire, whenever it's raging, spreads fast and furious, covering vast areas extensively. With the exception of Antarctica, wildfires occur on every continent, causing extensive damage, to both property and human life. Even though some wildfires burn in remote forested areas, they are still liable of causing extensive destruction to homes and property in adjoining rural areas. The ensuing haze pollution... Landslides' Avalanche of Mud.

When China observed a day of mourning on 15th August 2010 for the victims of the previous week's deadliest mudslide in Zhouqu, Gansu province, similar calamities of varying scale occurred elsewhere in various parts of Asia Pacific region. Landslides are common occurrences closely connected with major natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, wildfires, and floods, and they constitute major hazards if they are... Tsunami of Mud, Rocks, and Water.

Never have we seen so many occurrences of landslides/mudslides over a short period of just a few months (May-August 2010), albeit happening in different locations. In late May 2010, heavy rains brought flooding and landslides which killed 53 people in China's south-western Guangxi region. Elsewhere in Jiangxi, landslides derailed trains and caused the temporary closure of the Shanghai-Kunming railway line. On 27th July... (posted by M E 1 year 178 days ago.)
Higher Degree of Fractals

It was a study of fractals in Elliot Wave Principle and its applicability to the Theory of Chaos that brought me back from a hiatus of putting my thoughts on disaster management and related issues. Reflecting on natural disasters, the destruction they wreaked over the years, and the emerging trends of increasingly extreme weather patterns pricked my curiosity that "higher degree fractals" of disasters are playing out in 2010. As... (posted by M E 1 year 190 days ago.)
Bracing For Monsoonal Floods.

Even though Malaysia is comparatively safe being outside the "Pacific Rim of Fire" and away from threats of earthquakes, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions, the country still had its share of extreme climatic events mainly freaky thunderstorms and monsoonal floods. In late 2006, Typhoon Utor dumped 350 mm of rain within 24 hours in southern Peninsular Malaysia causing massive floods considered to be the worst in the southern... When Relief Operations Overwhelmed.

The principal challenge in any emergency following a natural disaster comprises providing immediate relief support to the worst affected populations. In practically all of the cases, the vulnerable groups disproportionately affected by natural disasters are the women and children. Lest we forget, the elderly were not spared and suffered equally in these situations. Humanitarian assistance hence has to focus on... (posted by M E 2 years 45 days ago.)
